I cannot work on the car on Saturday. I can come into Sac on Saturday night/sunday morning and work all sunday. If Cassidy plans on going to Sac on Friday or Saturday, we can load the engine in my truck and he can drive it up so the engine install can begin on Saturday. Then, I can drive his car up later. What do you all think for timing?

I would really like to get the car running this weekend.
I'll do as much prep work as I can, so it shouldn't take too long but it would be nice to have Saturday.

Eric,

The T100/Avalon swap can work. I'll be passing through your local on Saturday between 12 and 2PM. I have a test on Saturday morning that I can't skip out on.

Alan,

I have my eldest godson's birthday on Saturday that I am already going to be late to. Your house is clear across town and is a 30-45 minute drive each way from the party house. Even if I drop the engine off on my way to the party I won't be able to work on it until at least Saturday evening. I propose that I drop off the engine Saturday evening and we all wrench on Sunday.

6 Re: Start of Lists on Wed Apr 02, 2014 3:26 pm

Another slight complication... I will not be home on Saturday for the car swap.

My proposal...

  • I load the engine in the truck on Friday, complete with spare parts in the cab, and hoist in the bed.
  • Alan preps the Audi's current engine all that he can
  • Cass swaps keys in a prediscussed hiding location and drives to Alan's
  • Cass drops off engine, hoist, and parts
  • Alan wrenches
  • I drive up Saturday evening as soon as possible and meet at Alan's to wrench
  • We do all that we can and everyone reassembles on Sunday morning
  • Work in the morning
  • Fire up the engine and drive to lunch

Is there anything that I can do to the engine before this weekend?  I am planning on completing an oil/filter change to knock that out of the way, but otherwise, I don't know if there is much I can do.

Sounds like a plan.
You could bolt the turbo back up and reinstall the wiring harness

9 Re: Start of Lists on Tue Apr 08, 2014 9:14 am

How did the car run?

Did the test drive turn up any issues?

View user profile

10 Re: Start of Lists on Tue Apr 08, 2014 2:09 pm

no obvious issues, but there seems to be a slight lack of power.
I'm not sure if we have any issues or it is just how it is going to be with a little four cylinder trying to move a heavy awd car.
I'm going to try replacing the MAF sensor and diverter valve to see if that helps.

11 Re: Start of Lists on Wed Apr 09, 2014 11:15 am

Alan,

See if you can do a 0-60 run. The stock time was 7.8 seconds. Obviously with a car with 200,000 miles on it it will be a bit slower. I'd say as long as it is 9 seconds or less I think it's fine.

View user profile

12 Re: Start of Lists on Thu Apr 10, 2014 9:54 am

I'll give that a try after we swap out the MAF and diverter valve. I hope is is a little quicker than it was stock since it is running *mumblemumble*psi and the new engine only has 120k miles on it.

How is the entry essay coming along?

13 Re: Start of Lists on Thu Apr 10, 2014 4:40 pm

The new essay isn't done, but I posted what I have in General Discussion.

What work is being done this weekend?

View user profile

14 Re: Start of Lists on Fri Apr 11, 2014 8:16 am

I like the essay so far. Just some fine tuning and spelling of Quattro correctly should help us. Emphasis on the turbo and all wheel drive is important since those are things that increase unreliability. I really hope we don't have issues with getting into this race. Also, Kimia recommended that a possible theme for the future should we want it, is the Schick Quattro razor. Just a thought.

No work this weekend as Alan and I will be doing some reconnaissance in Buttonwillow.

4/14 status update
The good:
Compression results 160 162 164 160
The car has adequate power after MAF sensor replacement
The bad:
there is a misfire at low rpm and high load
There is a gravel in a blender noise coming from somewhere around the engine
my guess is the timing belt tensioner, but I will have to wait until the engine cools down to verify

View user profile

16 Re: Start of Lists on Mon Apr 14, 2014 7:47 pm

Glad to hear about the compression and MAF sensor.
There should be a new timing belt tensioner lying around the car. The one on the car was with the engine, but it looked quite shiny and new. It could be another tensioner or accessory. If not, then I have the new tensioner in the parts bin and will bring it this weekend.

Don't rule out the gravel sound being that driver's side CV joint.

Ok, so we have ~10 weeks to finish the car. In order to get this done we will need a solid plan preferably sorted by weekend. I'll start sorting our to-do list on the first page so that it reads sequentially. Please assist as you see fit.

I agree that we have a lot of work to do. Let's focus on stripping and getting it to run properly this weekend. Following our work day on Saturday doing such destruction, we can order parts on Sunday and have them the following weekend. I agree that we should be able to accomplish the work that you suggest in the next 2 weekends. Also, I have emailed the shop where Clint works now requesting a quote for a cage. Hopefully I will get a "repeat-customer" discount.

I was making plan earlier this year before ya'll decided you wanted to race again. As a result my availability is limited on the weekends. The current weekends I am occupied are:

April:
19th & 20th (It's Easter weekend, but I'll slip over when I can)
26th or 27th (I might be taking a long day hike on one of these days)

May:
17th & 18th (I'll probably be backpacking)
31st -June 2nd (I'll be camping)

June:
7th & 8th (might be camping again)
10th & 18th (I'll be on the East Coast) (this will be tight for me. I'll basically get off the plane and have to drive down to Button Willow with you guys the next day or so.)

So it looks like I can only really help for three weekends in May. Naturally I can organize duties and schedules remotely. It also means I should probably get my part of the theme done by the middle of May.

Also, I saw it listed that all of our race fees are due by the 26th. We need to decide if we want an arrive-and-drive.

To cover the sunroof hole, do you think we could get away with sheet metal and windshield adhesive? We need it to be strong and waterproof so rivets are out and I haven't come up with a better cover material than sheet metal.

View user profile

22 Re: Start of Lists on Tue Apr 22, 2014 11:23 am

That should do. If we have the metal ready to go when you get the windshield installed, you could have the technician just run a bead of the adhesive.

Alan and I will only be available to work until 3 on Saturday. I have class in the morning as well, but I'm going to try to get out of it or ditch out early.
